Art from Four Centuries
One artist finds and the other one searches, but Rupprecht Matthies can do it at the same time.
He roams through historical manuscripts: Lessing, and silhouettes: Runge, he takes them apart and puts them back together again. He turns paper cutouts into steel sculptures, and oil paintings into Kirchner mobiles. He traces the styles of his predecessor: Romanticism, Classicism and Expressionism, only to incorporate them and then to find himself at the end of the artistic supply chain in today’s world. Rupprecht Matthies updates these older positions out of the attitude that the colleagues were only concerned with the eternal human, the artistic drive and delivers a current translation of this, not without having made himself available as a medium for this.
He also anchors the nostalgic bridge to handwriting in the present. After all, hardly anyone writes by hand today. He combines handwriting with the modernity of acrylic glass. Rupprecht Matthies is interested in the unconscious moment of writing, the creative design in the automatism of handwriting, the loudness in the self-written and the beauty in the calligraphy of the everyday. He asks friends, acquaintances, and generally people he meets to write something down for him, a word, a thought. He preserves the personality, the character, and then continues to shape the writings. From this arise objects, artistic arrows that move directly to the center of perception.
His medium is the piece of writing, a thought that has become a piece in itself, the cut. The word in Rupprecht Matthies’ work corresponds to the grid, the rake, the nail, the felt, the turning, the dripping of other artists. He shapes the word and names his very own world with this means. The fundamental task of an artist is to find his own style in which he can express himself freely and sincerely, this Rupprecht Matthies manages virtuously and effortlessly and takes the visitor into a glass bead game, a menagerie of imagination and humor.
There will be writings by Lessing, flowers by Runge, figures and writings by Kirchner and more by Rupprecht Matthies.
